What are backlinks.

A backlink is a link from a page on one website to a page on another. Search engines treat these links as votes of confidence: when a trusted, relevant site links to yours, some of that trust passes across. That is why pages with strong backlink profiles consistently outrank pages without them, even when the content is comparable. Backlinks have been central to how Google ranks pages since the very beginning, and they remain one of the strongest signals in 2026.

Not all backlinks carry equal weight. A single editorial link from a respected industry publication can be worth more than hundreds of links from low-quality directories. The attributes that matter include the linking site’s authority, its topical relevance to your niche, whether the link is dofollow or nofollow, the anchor text used, and where the link sits on the page. A natural profile contains a healthy mix of all of these.

This is why checking a backlink profile is one of the most common jobs in SEO. You might be auditing your own site, sizing up a competitor, vetting a link prospect or researching a domain before buying it. In each case you need the same core data: how many sites link there, which pages attract the links, what anchors they use and how authoritative the sources are. This free backlink checker gives you all of that in one report.

How to use our Backlink Checker.

Enter a domain or URL

Type any domain (example.com), subdomain (blog.example.com) or exact page URL into the field. The tool cleans up the input automatically, so pasting a full address with https and trailing slashes is fine.

Choose the check mode

Pick Domain to analyse the whole site including subdomains, Subdomain to limit the check to one subdomain, or Exact URL to inspect the links pointing at a single page. Domain is the default and right for most checks.

Run the check

Hit the button and the tool pulls live data from the link index. Fresh lookups take a few seconds; repeat checks on recently queried targets return instantly from cache.

Dig into top backlinks, anchors and overview cards

The Top Backlinks tab lists the 25 strongest links, one per domain, with source page, authority, anchor text, follow status and first-seen date. The Top Anchors tab shows the ten most common anchor texts by referring domains.

Why we built this Backlinks Checker.

Solvid has been building links since 2015. Across 11+ years and 30,000+ backlinks built for clients, checking backlink profiles has been a daily task for our team: vetting prospects before outreach, analysing competitor profiles to plan campaigns, and reporting the links we deliver. We run these checks hundreds of times a week.

The frustration is that most free backlink checkers are crippled on purpose. They show three rows and a blurred table, then demand a credit card. We wanted a version that gives a genuinely useful snapshot with no account: real totals, the strongest links, the anchor distribution and an authority score, enough to make an actual decision about a domain.

So we built one and put it on our site for anyone to use. If the numbers you see raise bigger questions, whether the profile is healthy, why a competitor keeps outranking you, or how to close the gap, that is the work our link building service does every day.

A note on limits: This tool shows the top slice of a profile, which is enough for prospecting and quick competitive checks. Full link audits, disavow work and campaign planning need the complete link graph, historical data and human review. That is a service, not a free widget.

How our tool works.

The checker is powered by leading SEO data providers that crawl the web continuously and maintain independent indexes of trillions of links. When you run a check, our server queries that index in real time for three things: profile totals (backlinks, referring domains, broken links and the dofollow split), the top 25 backlinks ranked by source authority with one link per domain, and the top 10 anchors by referring domains.

The authority score shown is Domain Rank, measured on a 0 to 1000 scale. It is the data provider’s own metric, not Ahrefs DR or Moz DA, though the three correlate closely in practice. We normalise it to familiar 0 to 100 colour bands in the interface so the pills read the same way as our other tools. No third-party authority score, including this one, is used by Google as a ranking factor.

Results are cached for 24 hours per target and mode, which keeps the tool fast and free. One honest caveat: every link index is a sample of the web, so counts will never match other tools exactly. The direction and the proportions are what matter, and those are reliable.

Please Note:

1. This tool is provided free of charge and as-is. We do not guarantee the accuracy, completeness or availability of the data, and we do not guarantee any SEO outcomes from acting on it.

2. Backlink counts and authority scores come from third-party link indexes. They are proprietary estimates, not figures published by Google, and no authority metric shown here is a Google ranking factor.

3. Fair-use rate limits apply. Results are cached for up to 24 hours, so very recent link changes may not appear immediately.

4. If you need a complete, human-reviewed picture of a backlink profile, get in touch about a full link audit.

FAQ.

Common questions about the free backlink checker, the data behind it and how to read the results.
What exactly is a backlink?
A backlink is a link from a page on one website to a page on another. Search engines treat backlinks from relevant, trusted sites as a signal of credibility, which is why they remain one of the strongest ranking factors in SEO.
How many backlinks does it show?
The report shows full profile totals, the top 25 backlinks ranked by source authority (one per domain), and the top 10 anchor texts. For a complete export of every link, you would need a full link audit, which we offer as a service.
How fresh is the backlink data?
The underlying index is updated continuously as the provider’s crawlers discover new links. We cache results for 24 hours, so a repeat check on the same target within a day returns the stored report rather than a fresh crawl.
Can I check my competitors' backlinks?
Yes. The tool works on any publicly indexed domain or URL, not just your own. Checking who links to your competitors is one of the fastest ways to find realistic link prospects for your own campaigns.
Is the backlink checker really free?
Yes. You can run lookups on any domain or URL without creating an account or entering payment details. We apply fair-use rate limits so the tool stays fast and free for everyone.
What is the Domain Authority metric shown?
Domain Authority (DA) is the authority metric introduced by Moz to illustrate the authority and trustworthiness of a given website on a scale of 0 to 100 (100 being the highest authority).
Why do totals differ from other tools?
Every backlink tool runs its own crawler and its own index, so no two tools ever report identical numbers. Treat the figures as a reliable directional picture rather than an absolute count, and compare domains within the same tool.
What counts as a good backlink profile?
Look for steady growth in referring domains, a healthy share of dofollow links, varied natural anchor text and links from sites relevant to your topic. A profile dominated by exact-match anchors or low-quality directories is a warning sign.
