What is a backlink gap.

A backlink gap is the distance between the link profile your page has and the link profile the current top-ranking pages have. Google’s results are competitive by definition: if the pages in the top five for your keyword each have 60 referring domains and yours has 12, no amount of on-page polish is likely to close that difference on its own. The missing 48 domains are your gap.

Most link building fails at the planning stage, not the execution stage. Teams either buy an arbitrary number of links per month with no target, or they stare at a competitor’s five-figure backlink count and give up. Neither approach uses the data that actually matters: how many referring domains the realistic competitors have, what quality those links are, and, crucially, how fast those competitors keep adding new ones. A gap you close at 5 links a month while your rival adds 10 is a gap that grows.

This calculator turns all of that into a concrete plan. It identifies the keyword your page should target, benchmarks the pages you actually need to beat (mega-brand outliers excluded), counts your current referring domains, and produces the four numbers every campaign needs: how many links, at what DR mix, at what monthly pace, for how many months. It also shows you the proof: the fresh links your competitors picked up in the last 30 days.

How to use the Backlink Gap Calculator.

Paste your page URL

Enter the page you want to rank. If you already know the exact keyword you’re targeting, you can type it in to override the automatic detection. Otherwise, leave it blank and let the tool work it out.

Let the tool analyse the SERPs and competition

The tool reads your page, extracts candidate keywords, validates them against real search volume and checks what the page already ranks for. If you’re sitting at position 11 for something valuable, it will target that: cracking the top 3 for an existing keyword usually beats starting from zero.

Check the results

Over one to two minutes the tool measures the top 10 results, pulls each strong competitor’s referring domain history, and collects their newest DR 30+ links from the last 30 days. Progress messages show each stage.

Implement the plan

The report gives you links needed, months required and a month-by-month curve. Execute it in-house, hand it to your agency, or ask Solvid to run the exact campaign the numbers describe.

Why we built this Backlink Gap Tool.

Solvid has run white-hat link building campaigns since 2015. Over 11+ years and tens of thousands of links built for clients, the first question in every engagement has been the same: how many links does this page actually need? Answering it properly used to take an analyst half a day of pulling SERP data, referring domain counts and competitor link histories into a spreadsheet.

This calculator is that half-day of analysis automated. The model inside it is the one our own team uses to scope campaigns: benchmark the realistic top five, ignore the outliers nobody can beat, set a pace slightly above the competitors’ own link velocity, and be honest when the domain itself is the problem. We built it as a free tool because a plan grounded in evidence is the best possible introduction to how we work.

A note on honesty: If the tool concludes a keyword is unwinnable for your page, it says so and suggests a better target. A plan that flatters you into a two-year campaign you can’t win helps nobody, least of all us.

How the tool works.

The scan starts by reading your page and identifying the best target keyword: candidates are extracted from your content, validated against real search volume from our keyword data, and cross-checked against anything the page already ranks for. Then the tool pulls the top 10 results with their authority scores, referring domain counts and estimated traffic from our link index, plus 12 months of referring domain history for the strongest competing pages.

The gap model itself is deterministic, so the same inputs always produce the same plan. Your target is the 60th percentile of referring domains across the top five organic results, with mega-brand outliers such as Wikipedia-class sites excluded, adjusted by a competitiveness modifier that accounts for intent match and SERP quality. The recommended velocity is your competitors’ median monthly link growth multiplied by 1.25, bounded to stay natural-looking. Duration is the gap divided by the velocity, with a note that rankings typically respond a couple of months after the links land. The DR mix shifts upmarket as the SERP gets stronger, and if your domain’s authority sits well below the SERP median, the plan says so and extends the timeline rather than pretending.

The evidence layer is what makes the numbers believable: for each main competitor, the tool lists real referring domains they gained in the last 30 days, dofollow and DR 30 or above, with dates. When the report says your rivals build eight qualifying links a month, you can see the links.

Please Note:

1. This tool is provided for free, as-is. The plan it produces is a data-led benchmark for competitiveness, not a guarantee of rankings, traffic or any other outcome.

2. Link metrics and SERP data change constantly, so figures reflect our data at the time of the scan and may differ from other tools’ numbers.

3. Scans are limited to two per day per user to keep the tool free. Please only scan pages you own or have a genuine professional interest in.

4. Scan inputs and reports are stored so we can email your plan and improve the tool. We do not sell your data, and you can ask us to delete it at any time.

FAQ.

Common questions about the Backlink Gap Calculator and the plan it produces.
What is a backlink gap?
A backlink gap is the difference between the referring domains your page has and the number the current top-ranking pages have. If page one averages 60 referring domains and you have 12, your gap is roughly 48 domains.
Where does the link data come from?
From our link index and live search results data, refreshed constantly. Every number in the report, including competitor link velocity, comes from links actually observed in the last weeks and months, not from static averages or rules of thumb.
Why are some competitors excluded from the benchmark?
Sites like Wikipedia or Amazon rank on brand power no ordinary page can match. Including them would inflate your target to a useless number. The tool flags them as outliers and benchmarks you against the results you can realistically beat.
Why do I need to give my email?
Each scan pulls a significant amount of live link and keyword data, which costs us money. You see the primary keyword and a preview free, and the full plan arrives by email. That trade keeps the tool free for everyone.
How do you calculate the number of links I need?
We benchmark against the top five organic results, take the 60th percentile of their referring domains, exclude mega-brand outliers and adjust for intent and SERP quality. Your current referring domains are subtracted from that benchmark to give the gap.
What does the monthly velocity number mean?
It is how many new referring domains per month the plan recommends. We measure how fast your competitors gain links, then set a pace slightly above their median so you close the gap without looking unnatural to search engines.
What if the keyword is simply unwinnable?
The tool tells you straight. If every strong result outguns your domain by a wide margin, you get an honest verdict and a suggested alternative keyword where a realistic plan exists. We would rather lose a scan than sell you a fantasy.
Is the plan a guarantee I will rank?
No. It is the link benchmark you need to be competitive. Rankings also depend on content quality, search intent and overall site health, which is why the report flags intent mismatches and domain-level weaknesses alongside the link numbers. If you want the campaign run for you, that’s what our link building service does.
