What is Domain Authority.

Domain Authority, usually shortened to DA, is a search ranking metric developed by Moz. It scores any domain from 1 to 100 and predicts how likely that domain is to rank in search results compared with other sites. The higher the score, the stronger the site’s overall link profile. It has become the default shorthand for site strength across the SEO industry, particularly in link building, where almost every prospect list is filtered by DA before anyone writes a single outreach email.

Moz calculates DA from its own index of the web. The model looks at how many unique websites link to a domain, the quality and authority of those linking sites, and dozens of related link signals. It then runs those inputs through a machine learning model trained against real search results. The scale is logarithmic, which means climbing from DA 20 to 30 is far easier than climbing from 70 to 80.

One thing worth being clear about: DA is not used by Google. It is a third-party prediction, not a ranking factor. Its value is comparative. A DA 55 site is almost certainly a stronger link prospect than a DA 15 site, and tracking your own DA against direct competitors tells you whether the gap is opening or closing.

How to use our Domain Authority checker.

Enter a domain or URL

Type any domain, with or without www, or paste a full page URL. The tool normalises the input automatically and flags anything invalid before running the check.

Run the check

Hit the button and the tool queries Moz’s link index server-side. Cached domains return in under a second; fresh lookups take a moment longer.

Read the DA gauge

The headline score appears in a colour-banded gauge: 0 to 29 red, 30 to 49 amber, 50 to 69 light green, 70 plus green, with a one-line interpretation underneath.

Review the supporting metrics

Alongside DA you get Page Authority, linking root domains, total external links and spam score. Together, they show whether the headline number rests on a healthy profile.

Why we built this checker.

Solvid has been building links since 2015. Over 11+ years and 30,000+ backlinks built for clients, our team has run DA and DR checks on every single prospect that enters an outreach list. It is the least glamorous step in link building and one of the most important: a placement on a weak or spammy domain is worse than no placement at all.

The problem is that most free DA checkers are annoying. They gate results behind email signups, throttle you after two checks, or bury the number under ads and upsells. When your team checks hundreds of domains a week, that friction adds up. Internally, we solved it with direct API access, and it seemed obvious that the wider SEO community would benefit from the same thing.

So we made our internal check public. One field, one click, the real Moz numbers, no games. It is the exact vetting step we run on every prospect at Solvid, packaged as a free tool.

A note on limits: DA is one signal, not a verdict. We never approve a link prospect on DA alone; traffic, relevance and editorial standards matter just as much. Use the score to filter quickly, then look at the site like a human before you commit.

How our Domain Authority Checker works.

The tool talks directly to the Moz Links API, the official source of Domain Authority. Moz owns and calculates the metric; we request it along with Page Authority, linking root domains, total external links and spam score, then present everything in one view. Nothing is estimated or scraped, so the figures match what you would see inside Moz’s own tools.

When you paste a deep URL rather than a bare domain, we check the root domain’s DA and also return Page Authority for the exact page you entered. Results are cached for 24 hours per domain, which keeps repeat checks instant and API usage sensible. The result panel tells you whether you are seeing a fresh or cached figure.

Worth repeating: DA is not a Google ranking factor, and Google has said so publicly. It is a well-calibrated prediction built from link data. Treat it as a comparative measure between sites, not a grade Google gives you, and it becomes genuinely useful.

Please Note:

1. This tool is provided for free as-is. Domain Authority is a metric owned and calculated by Moz; we display it under licence and cannot influence or correct individual scores.

2. DA is not a Google ranking factor. We make no guarantees about rankings, traffic or business outcomes based on any score shown here.

3. Results are cached for up to 24 hours, so very recent link changes may not be reflected immediately.

4. Fair-use rate limits apply to keep the tool responsive. If you need high-volume checks, try the bulk DA checker or get in touch.

FAQ.

Quick answers on Domain Authority, where the data comes from and how to read the score.
What is Domain Authority (DA)?
Domain Authority is Moz’s 1 to 100 score predicting how well a domain is likely to rank, based on the strength of its link profile. Higher is stronger. It is a comparative metric, so it works best for weighing domains against each other rather than reading any single score in isolation.
Is Domain Authority a Google ranking factor?
No. Google has confirmed it does not use Domain Authority. DA is a Moz metric that predicts ranking ability based on link data. It correlates with rankings because strong link profiles help both, but Google never reads the score itself.
Where does the DA data come from?
Directly from the Moz Links API, the official source of Domain Authority. We request the DA score, linking root domains, external links and spam score for each domain you check, so the numbers match what you would see inside Moz.
Why did my Domain Authority score drop?
DA is relative and recalculated across the whole web. Your score can fall even when you lost nothing, simply because other sites gained links or Moz adjusted its model. Look at linking root domains over time for a steadier signal.
What's the difference between DA and DR?
Domain Authority (DA) is a metric introduced by Moz, while Domain Rating (DR) is a metric coined by Ahrefs. They essentially illustrate the same thing – authority of a given website. However, the main difference is their respective algorithms that they use to determine how authoritative the website is. Both based on a 0 to 100 scale (100 being the highest authority).
What is a good Domain Authority score?
It depends on your niche. Scores of 30 to 49 are typical for established small sites, 50 to 69 suggests a strong link profile, and 70 plus is reserved for major publications. Compare against direct competitors rather than chasing an absolute number.
Is this Domain Authority checker really free?
Yes. There is no signup, no credit system and no paywall. We apply sensible fair-use limits to keep the tool fast for everyone, but a normal user checking domains through the day will never notice them.
How often is the DA data updated?
Moz refreshes its index regularly, roughly monthly for most domains. We cache results for 24 hours to keep the tool quick, so a repeat check within a day returns the same figures with a note showing when they were fetched.
Can I check a specific page instead?
Yes. Paste a full URL and we check the root domain’s DA as usual, but also show Page Authority for the exact page you entered. Page Authority is the page-level equivalent of DA and useful when comparing individual articles.
How do I increase my Domain Authority?
Earn links from more unique, reputable websites. Linking root domains move DA far more than raw link counts, so ten links from ten good sites beat a hundred from one. Quality content, digital PR and consistent outreach are the reliable routes. That is the work our link building service does every day.
