Bounce Rate

What is Bounce Rate?

Your bounce rate refers to the percentage of visitors who arrive on one of your pages before leaving without taking any further action, such as clicking away onto another page.

For example, if 100 people land on your blog post and 60 of them read it before closing the tab or hitting the back button, you’ll have a 60% bounce rate for your page.

Bounce rates have long been recognised as one of SEO’s most important engagement metrics, but it’s also one of the most misunderstood.

Are Bounce Rates Bad?

Many marketers mistakenly believe that high bounce rates are inherently bad, but this isn’t always the case. In reality, it depends on what the page in question is actually for.

If someone is looking for information fast and lands on your page, finds the answer they want, and leaves satisfied, it should be regarded as a successful visit, even if it will contribute to your bounce rate.

With this in mind, you shouldn’t spend too much time worrying about bounce rates for your blog posts that seek to answer simple questions, your contact pages that feature email addresses and business phone numbers, or a recipe page that’s easy for someone to screenshot and close. These are just some examples of how a high bounce rate actually suggests that your page is doing its intended job.

Context, as far as bounce rates are concerned, is everything when determining whether a page is a success or not.

Cause for Comparison

The most useful thing about bounce rates is that they’re great for drawing comparisons between your different pages.

If one of your pages that’s designed to keep the flow of traffic moving throughout your website, such as a product or category page, has a relatively high bounce rate compared to other similar pages, it’s certainly worth investigating.

The cause of high bounce rates can suggest that a page is failing to meet visitor expectations for a variety of reasons, including weak content, slow loading times, an unappealing layout, or irrelevant copy.

Because your bounce rate is a clear and easy-to-follow metric, any negative outliers can mean that you’ll quickly be able to address the issue and explore the cause for the underperforming data.

Do Bounce Rates Affect Rankings?

At this stage, it’s important to note that high bounce rates don’t directly affect Google rankings, but there are some indirect implications that need to be kept in check.

For instance, Google has often suggested that it doesn’t use the bounce rate from your analytics as a ranking signal. What the search engine does pay attention to, however, is whether searchers are satisfied with the websites offered to them as answers to queries.

Patterns such as pogo-sticking, where users bounce back to search results and click a rival link instead, can be interpreted as a clear sign of satisfaction. However, bounce rates and user dissatisfaction are two entirely different things and the latter can be extremely difficult to measure.

How Bounce Rates Have Changed

It’s also important to note that the metric used for measuring bounce rates has changed over the years.

With the move to Google Analytics 4, old bounce rates were replaced by engagement-focused metrics, and the old measure was later reintroduced with a different definition that was based on engaged sessions.

This means that if you’re comparing figures over time or across tools, it’s worth making sure of what definition you’re looking at.

As a rule of thumb, it’s a good idea to treat your bounce rate as one diagnostic input among many, always interpreted in light of what your pages are trying to achieve, rather than just a score to drive down for the sake of it.
