AuthorRank

What is AuthorRank?

The term AuthorRank refers to the idea that the reputation of an individual who wrote an article or created any other piece of content could influence how it ranks, separate from external factors like website or page authority.

The logic behind this is that a respected industry expert’s article should carry more weight than anything that’s been published anonymously or by a lower-reputation author, even if it’s posted onto the same website. Here, the authority’s track record of quality content signals a higher level of trustworthiness.

This measure is sometimes referred to as AgentRank and is a hot topic for discussion throughout the SEO landscape, having had its relevance debated for well over a decade.

What is AuthorRank?

Why is AuthorRank worth discussing if it’s only a concept? The reason why it gained attention is because Google held patents describing systems that were capable of scoring documents based on the reputation of their authors. In the past, the search engine giant has also experimented with Google Authorship, which was a program that linked content to the profiles of authors, showing their photos in search results.

There was a period where it appeared that author identity may become a strong ranking factor, but the programme was retired by Google in 2014 and the idea of an explicit AuthorRank score seemed to disappear.

Does AuthorRank Exist?

So, does AuthorRank actually exist? The answer is uncertain. Google has been clear in stating that it doesn’t use a specific metric that resembles AuthorRank, but there’s also plenty of evidence that the search engine giant places a strong emphasis on similar qualities when judging the quality of its content.

Similar concepts have surfaced through E-E-A-T, which is a framework of Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness that Google’s quality systems and human raters use to assess content.

Although E-E-A-T doesn’t offer a simple score to follow either, it can draw on the idea that content that’s produced by verifiable experts will be favoured online over copy that’s created by unknown or unqualified authors.

Boosting Author Credibility

This means that author reputation really is worth taking seriously, even if AuthorRank doesn’t strictly exist. On topics where trust is important business, especially when it comes to industries as sensitive as health, finance, or safety, showing who wrote your content and establishing their credentials can really help.

Using clear author bios, links to author profiles or Gravatars, and drawing on genuine expertise within your content can all work wonders in boosting your credibility.

Although AuthorRank doesn’t exist as a literal ranking factor today, the broader idea seems to still be working in the world of SEO that credible authors are more likely to publish trusted content.

This means that investing in real expertise and reputation can work wonders for your reputation online.
